The 2004-2005 Season

September 3-5: (04-G-45-00035, 08/31/04): Working.    Broadway Revisited begins the  2004-2005 season with a Labor Day Weekend visit with the musical version of Studs Terkel's “Working”, sampling three different productions.

September 10-12: (04-G-45-00036, 09/07/04):
The Summer’s New Broadway Paper and Plastic.  There were so many new books, videos, and recordings over the summer that we’ll have two programs of new releases— next week from Hollywood, this week from Broadway.

September 17-19: (04-G-45-00037, 09/14/04): The Summer’s New Hollywood Paper and Plastic. 
Part two of our reviews of the new releases.

September 24-26: (04-G-45-00038, 09/21/04): Songwriters Talk and Sing. 
Samplings of lectures in which songwriters talk about their work—  and demonstrate it.

October 1-3: (04-G-45-00039, 9/28/04): The Shows of Lerner and Loewe. 
They wrote a lot more musicals than My Fair Lady.

October 8-10: (04-G-45-00040, 10/5/04): Politics and Poker. 
For the election season, this week’s Broadway Revisited revisits Broadway’s take on campaigns.  Politics and Poker on Broadway Revisited.

October 15-17: (04-G-45-00041, 10/12/04): ‘Tis Autumn. 
Broadway salutes autumn, from falling leaves to falling snow.

October 22-24: (04-G-45-00042, 10/19/04): The New Broadway Season. 
What’s happening in 2004-2005.

October 29-31: (04-G-45-00043, 10/26/04): Halloween. 
The Phantom, the Spider Woman, that whole crowd.


November 5-7: (04-G-45-00044, 11/02/04): Lerner without Loewe.  The lyrics of Alan Jay Lerner with the music of Burton Lane, Kurt Weill, and others.

November 12-14: (04-G-45-00045, 11/09/04): “Finian’s Rainbow”.  The Harburg-Lane classic about magic, romance, and politics.  

November 19-21: (04-G-45-00046, 11/16/04): Pearl Bailey and Sammy Davis Jr.  A selection of Broadway songs sung by two great Broadway stars.

November 26-28: (04-G-45-00047, 11/23/04): Broadway by the Year.  Every June, a Town Hall concert salutes the musicals of a past season.  We’ll sample these concerts covering years from 1925 to 1964.

December 3-5: (04-G-45-00048, 11/30/04): Autumn New Paper & Plastic.  The season’s new books, records, and videos.

December 10-12: (04-G-45-00049, 12/07/04): “Brigadoon”. A rare recording of the complete Lerner and Loewe score.

December 17-19: (04-G-45-00050, 12/14/04): London’s Broadway.  An assortment of original cast performances from the West End.

December 24-26: (04-G-45-00051, 12/21/04): Mickey Mouse Music.  Mickey Mouse first appeared in September 1928, but 2004 was his official 75th birthday. 

December 31-January 2: (04-G-45-00052, 12/28/04): Celebrate the New Year with Bobby Short.

January 7-9: (05-G-45-00001, 1/4/05): Cy Coleman.  Composer Cy Coleman died late last year and this week we review his five decades on Broadway.

January 14-16: (05-G-45-00002, 1/11/05): “A Little Night Music”. This week Broadway Revisited  lightens this season of long dark nights with an hour of midnight sun, and the musical version of Ingmar Bergman’s Smiles of A Summer Night, Stephen Sondheim’s A Little Night Music.

January 21-23: (05-G-45-00003, 1/1805):
Tony Bennett and Maureen McGovern.  A pair of singers who keep alive the songs of Kern, Arlen, Rodgers and Hart and other classic songwriters.

January 28-30: (05-G-45-00004, 1/25/05):
Faith, Hope and Therapy. When the stress of life gets you down, there's relief in show tunes. This week, Broadway Revisited offers some faith, hope, and therapy. Contemporary answers to modern problems from assorted shows, this week on Broadway Revisited.

February 4-6: (05-G-45-00005, 2/1/05): Arlen @ 100.  Harold Arlen was born in February 1905, and this week Broadway Revisited celebrates his centennial with a review of his life and work.

February 11-13: (05-G-45-00006, 2/8/05): My Funny Valentine. 
For Valentine’s Day weekend, Broadway Revisited presents an assortment of theatrical love songs, some of them tender, but some comic Valentines, too.  My Funny Valentine, this week on Broadway Revisited.

February 18-20: (05-G-45-00007, 2/15/05): Pelham Grenville Wodehouse. 
P.G. Wodehouse, best known as an English novelist, was one of the founding fathers of the classic American musical.

February 25-27: (05-G-45-00008, 2/22/05): New Winter Paper and Plastic. 
The new records, books and videos of the season.

March 4-6: (05-G-45-00009, 3/1/05): Remembering Jerry Orbach.  From “The Threepenny Opera” to “42nd Street”.     

March 11-13: (05-G-45-00010, 3/8/05): Bernstein’s Broadway.  The shows of Leonard Bernstein       

March 18-20: (05-G-45-00011, 3/15/05): Sondheim @ 75.  This month, Stephen Sondheim reaches the three-quarters mark and his fiftieth year on Broadway.      

March 25-27: (05-G-45-00012, 3/22/05): Operetta’s Greatest Hits.  From Vienna and Paris to Broadway.     

April 1-3: (05-G-45-00013, 3/29/05): Spring Is Here.  A salute to the vernal equinox.

April 8-10: (05-G-45-00014, 4/5/05): “The Girl Friend” meets “The Boy Friend”. 
A revival of a 1926 Rodgers and Hart show and a 1953 West End 1920s pastiche.

April 15-17: (05-G-45-00015, 4/12/05): Sarah Vaughan and Billy Eckstine. 
And Gershwin, Berlin, and more.

April 22-24: (05-G-45-00016, 4/19/05): Going Places. 
From Kalamazoo to Cancun.

April 29-May 1: (05-G-45-00017, 4/26/05): “The Pajama Game” and “Damn Yankees”. 
Jerry Ross and Richard Adler only wrote two shows together and both were hits.

May 6-8:  (05-G-45-00018, 5/3/05): Fifty Years Ago.  The Broadway seasons plus or minus 1955 were rich with memorable shows, and this week Broadway Revisited remembers a dozen of them.

May 13-15:  (05-G-45-00019, 5/10/05): “Show Boat”. 
This week on Broadway Revisited you can hear quite a bit of the classic score by Oscar Hammerstein and Jerome Kern, from “Make Believe” to “Ol’ Man River”.  Life upon the floating stage this week, with Broadway Revisited and “Show Boat”. 

May 20-22:  (05-G-45-00020, 5/17/05): Global Broadway.
"Intellectual Property" is one of our few remaining exports.  During Think Global Week, Broadway Revisited presents more than a dozen foreign language performances of songs heard in productions of Broadway shows from around the world.

May 27-29:  (05-G-45-00021, 5/24/05): The Spring’s New Paper and Plastic. 
New books, videos, and compact discs. 

June 3-5:  (05-G-45-00022, 5/31/05): Tony Awards Preview.  The Tony Awards will be given Sunday night.  We’ll hear all the nominees this week on Broadway Revisited.

    Singers and Songwriters Summer

Biographies are featured this summer on Broadway Revisited, including those of Dorothy Fields, Jule Styne, and Harold Arlen, all of whom were born a century ago in 1905, and of Stephen Sondheim, who turned seventy-five this year.  They alternate with recitals of the great songs by great singers.  The programs include remembrances of lyricist Fred Ebb, composer Cy Coleman, and singer-pianist Bobby Short, all of whom died this year.

June 10-12:  (05-G-45-00023, 6/7/05): Ella and Louis.  In the 1950's, Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong recorded five lps of show tunes as duets.  We’ll sample as many songs that fit in the hour.

June 17-19:  (05-G-45-00024, 6/14/05): Cy Coleman.  Composer Cy Coleman died late last year and this week we review his five decades on Broadway.

July 22-24:  (05-G-45-00029, 7/19/05): Mabel Mercer and Robert Clary.  Mabel Mercer came form England and Robert Clary is from France, both masters at singing Broadway.

July 29-31:  (05-G-45-00030, 7/26/05): The Songs of Kander and Ebb.   Lyricist Fred Ebb died last September, and we remember him with the songs he wrote with composer John Kander.

August 5-7:  (05-G-45-00031, 8/2/05): Sarah Vaughan and Billy Eckstine.  And Gershwin, Berlin, and more.

August 12-14:  (05-G-45-00032, 8/9/05):  Sondheim @ 75.  Last March, Stephen Sondheim reached the three-quarters mark and his fiftieth year on Broadway.      

August 19-21:  (05-G-45-00033, 8/16/05): Frank Sinatra and Billie Holiday.  Classic Broadway sung by master singers.  

August 26-28:  (05-G-45-00034, 8/23/05): The Shows of Jule Styne.  Along with songs for movies and Frank Sinatra, Jule Styne wrote a string of Broadway hits including “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes”, “Bells Are Ringing”, and “Gypsy”.  We celebrate his birth a century ago this week on Broadway Revisited.
